The setting of the work is the kingdom of Denmark, during what is assumed to be the late medieval period. The late medieval period was a time of crisis, characterized by soil exhaustion and agricultural decline. Both are images of decay that parallel those found in Hamlet. The era is also rife with religious response to crises as well, which parallels Hamlet’s dilemmas between fate vs. free will and life vs. the afterlife.
